I write a blog about local gourmet food in Japan.

This time, I thought I'd write an article aimed at people visiting from other countries.

I apologize for my poor English、、、😢

Since you've come to Japan, you'll want to enjoy some truly Japanese cuisine.

I think there are many people who want to enjoy the unique cuisine of Japan.

However, recently, there have been many cases where companies have taken advantage of these inbound tourists by selling them low-quality, high-priced items.

Not all inbound tourists to Japan are wealthy.

Some of them may want to enjoy Edo cuisine at a reasonable price.

This time, I would like to write about how you can enjoy typical Edomae cuisine at a very reasonable price.

When it comes to the most representative gourmet foods in Japan, I think of "Edomae sushi," "Edomae tendon (tempura)," "eel," and "Japanese soba."

So, I would like to write about how you can enjoy these Edo gourmet foods at a reasonable price one by one.

①SUSHI

For the most part, if you want to save money, you can go to one of the major conveyor belt sushi chains, such as Kura Sushi in Asakusa.

However, if you want to enjoy authentic Edomae sushi, we recommend a sushi restaurant called 『Moriichi.』

That's because you can enjoy "red rice," "vinegared gizzard shad," "tuna," "Edomae conger eel," and "eel."
All of these are essential items for Edomae sushi.

The menu is written only in Japanese.

So, I've marked the items on the menu, so you can refer to them when ordering with the staff.

From left to right:
・Tamago =tamagosusi=たまご(a traditional Japanese sushi dish made with dashi omelet),

・Eel =umagi=うなぎ(eel bowl restaurants are expensive, so try eel here!
Although it's not quite as good as the taste of a specialty restaurant, you can still experience the taste of eel.)

・Conger eel =anago=あなご(an essential item in Edomae sushi)

・Tuna=maguro=まぐろ (the perfect sushi dish)

Moriichi is located in the station building of Kinshicho Station on the Sobu Line, less than 10 minutes by train from Tokyo Station.

Moriichi is cheaper than high-end conveyor belt sushi restaurants, but more expensive than major conveyor belt sushi restaurants, and is somewhere in between.

There are also stores at Tabata Station on the Keihin-Tohoku Line, Kameido Station on the Sobu Line (local trains with yellow stripes), and Funabashi City in Chiba Prefecture.

There's no English signage, so it takes courage to visit, but
if you order using the image from this blog, I think the staff will understand.

By the way, major conveyor-belt sushi chains include
Sushiro, Hama Sushi,
and the aforementioned Kura Sushi.

Major conveyor belt sushi chains such as Hama Sushi have English buttons on their terminals, making ordering easy

②TEMPURA・TENDON

Tempura is one of Japan's traditional "Edomae gourmet foods."
However, the way modern tempura is made is slightly different from the traditional Edomae tempura.

The frying time and temperature, the amount of batter (similar to the batter on a pancake) and the type of oil used for frying are all different.

Tempura dipped in sweet and spicy sauce and served on top of rice is called "Tendon."

If you're going to eat tendon, you want to eat the traditional Japanese Edomae tendon, right?

Edomae tendon and tempura are high-end , but
there are some places where you can eat them at a slightly more reasonable price.

The chain restaurant "Kaneko Hannosuke" prepares Edomae tendon using a cooking method that is relatively close to the traditional method.

What's more, it's reasonably priced.
Kaneko Hannosuke has stores mainly in food courts in shopping malls.

In restaurant-style stores,
They have shop in Nihonbashi and Tsukiji,
It costs about 1,600 yen.

Tempura ingredients include shrimp, seasonal vegetables, conger eel, and eggs.

They are deep-fried in low-temperature sesame oil,
and finally topped with a sweet sauce.

It's twice the price of the major tendon chains, but cheaper than high-end restaurants serving authentic Edomae tendon.

③Japanese noodle(NIHON SOBA)&chicken and egg on rice(oyakodon)

Japan's traditional "standing soba restaurants" have their roots in food stalls from the Edo period.

While many soba restaurants in Japan are high-end,
"standing soba restaurants" are more affordable.

They can be considered the origin of fast food in Japan.

In recent years, the quality of soba noodles at stand-up soba restaurants has improved, and more and more stores are now offering authentic Japanese soba noodles.

Nowadays, more and more standing soba restaurants have chairs,
so you can eat in peace.

A stand-up soba restaurant that caters to inbound tourists is Sagatani's Akihabara branch.

It's hard to see in the picture, but the ticket machine has English instructions.

If you want to enjoy Edo-style soba, try "Morisoba"

The soba noodles are served in a flat bowl and dipped into the cold soup in a small container.

Eating this will give you a taste of the Edo period.

If possible,
why not try ordering the "Oyakodon and cold soba set"?

Screenshot_20260118-041332~2

Oyakodon is a traditional Japanese dish made by boiling chicken in soy sauce, sugar, and dashi broth and mixing it with eggs.
The seasoning of Oyakodon is similar to the famous "Sukiyaki"

Warm soba noodles with tempura are also delicious. It's a typical menu item at stand-up soba restaurants.

There are many other dishes that I would like inbound tourists to try, but this is the best I can introduce in my poor English.

I hope this article will be of some help to you.
